OT blogs and community

As part of our course we were asked to consider the range of
online communities. What has inspired me has been the
range of vibrant and amazing sites/blogs
by folks who experience disability.....

Assistive Technology

We had an inspiring lecture and tutorial presented to us by Dave Speden from
Kimi ora School in Wellington.

He talked to us about how assistive technology could be an enable
people with physical disabilites have more control over their physical environments and how communication devices provided more control over their social environment.

Assistive Technology is defined by Cook and Hussey as “a broad range of devices, services, strategies and practices that are conceived and applied to ameliorate the problems faced by individuals who have disabilities”

Dave described a person-centred way of assessing for A/T

Student (physical, cognitive, affective)
Environment (physical and social)
Tasks (they may want to participate in - cooking, computers, outdoor activities)
Technology/Tools (technology is the last decision not the first)

access to information technology

In this paper our first tutorial was about information technology and ethics…..

Hammel and Smith (1993) linked the importance of this topic to occupational therapy.

“The ability to access and use information technologies has become a survival skill for every member of society and should therefore be considered part of meaningful occupation” p. 970
Hammel, J.M. & Smith, R. O. (1993). The development of technology competencies and training guidelines for occupational therapists. The American Journal of Occupational Therapy, 47(11), 970-997.

But not all people have equal access to information technology

Starting your blog

Blogging is a very interesting phenomena in that it allows anyone with access to a computer and an internet connection to self-publish and potentially reach an audience.

For content to be useful, it must be readable, relevant and reliable, usable and accessible, and site and content must be discoverable. Follow this link for more info...

My blog is not very accessible because I have chosen to fill it with youtube
videos which = increased loading time for anyone who doesn't have fast speed broadband........

Blogger is a free service that offers you a range of templates to easily and quickly start your own blog....

By signing up for a blog with google you agree to the following.....

Flickr and digital photography

Here is an helpful link comparing digital vs analogue cameras

Our second tutorial covered the use of digital cameras taking photos around the campus and trying to load these onto the internet....we posted these onto flicker so we could link them onto our blog....by posting my photos onto Flickr I granted yahoo the rights to

the royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive and fully sublicensable right and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, perform and display such Content (in whole or part) worldwide and/or to incorporate it in other works in any form, media, or technology now known or later developed.

I thought the technology later developed part was cute.....

Access to free computers and computer training in Dunedin.....

Dunedin Public Libraries; Blueskin Bay,Dunedin City, Mosgiel, Port Chalmers, Waikouaiti.

free wireless access for laptops and a suite of desktop computers available. Can access broadband internet, email, facebook, skype etc etc

The library also offers free introductory computer classes for individuals or groups:
http://www.dunedinlibraries.com/home/?page=aboutus_tours_computer

The free computer access at Dunedin public libraries has been provided by "The Aotearoa People’s Network Kaharoa which provides free access to broadband internet services in public libraries so that everyone can benefit from accessing, experiencing and creating digital content.

The network benefits anyone who has access to a public library. It opens up the digital world to all people and communities by giving them access to computers, the internet and training. Scanners, audio recorders and Kete (digital repositories) allow communities to gather, digitise and store their histories and memories and to share them with others."

This was an initiative that came out of the NZ digital strategy and the National Library...it is nationwide reaching an increasing number of libraries...120 at last count...I think it is fantastic in going some way to addressing the inequalities around access to computers/internet etc.

The Dunedin city council has just started a trial of free wireless broadband in the octagon...only accessible to folks who have access to laptop computers with a wireless connection...
